Australia, Make Public School Donations Tax-Deductible

Australia should work out a way for public schools to receive more donations.

As it is now, donors get tax cuts for funding scholarships for students to attend private schools, but no cuts for those who wish to fill the more pressing needs of public schools. And, as it is, it has discouraged at least one family that wanted to donate $20,000 to help Aboriginal students at their regional high school, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

The Gonski fund has published a review that says one solution to this inequitable situation is for the government to set up a national philanthropic fund. But in order for this to work, says the review, a lot of reform will be needed, and the Minster for Education and the Treasury will have to work together to make it happen.

The Morning Herald recommends supporting the Gonski review as "a great piece of reform work" and says the government, so far, seems cooperative.

Tell Australia to make public school donations tax-deductible.
