The District 181 Board of Education and Administrators are seriously considering a proposal to eliminate or substantially modify the entire gifted program in the district, including the accelerated math and language arts programs, beginning with the 2012-2013 school year as a result of a report prepared by an education consultant. The report is available for review on the district's website. Unfortunately, a replacement program has not been researched nor developed, nor is it likely that one can be by September 2012. While we do not oppose modifications to the programs to encourage more inclusivity and fluidity, students currently in the program or who would be eligible to participate in the program will be negatively impacted if the programs are removed without an acceptable replacement. The petition asks the board and administration to keep the current programs in place until an alternative program is fully developed.
