Every student signing this petition is in good standing with the University and pays thousands of dollars of tuition each year. Many of these students live in the dorms and pay additional thousands of dollars to Residence Life yet are being denied access to meeting rooms located in publicly accessible areas of the residence halls on a weekly basis.
Considering Residence Life desires to create "living environment that is supportive, educational and enjoyable" we strongly believe student groups can add to this goal by providing consistent programing that Residence Life does not provide.
In addition, student involvement has been proven to increase retention and improve the overall experience of BGSU students. In a time where many students are struggling to return to BGSU after their first semester/year it seems fitting to give student groups more access to usable space not less.
We strongly urge Residence Life to reconsider their policy of allowing student groups access to meeting rooms only two times per semester (found here http://www.bgsu.edu/offices/sa/reslife/page20092.html). If Residence Life refuses this request we call on the Dean of Students office to intervene and exercise advocacy for the students who they represent. In the name of "Intellectual and Personal Growth" we strongly believe being denied consistence access to common spaces in the resident halls hinders student group's ability to contribute to BGSU Core Values.
