Whether a student is entitled to use profane language at school should not be dependent upon the student's gender. Queen of Peace High School in New Jersey has recently made its female students, and ONLY its female students, take an oath against profane language on school grounds.
The petition was instituted, according to school officials, as an effort to curb use of foul language and to encourage good manners on school grounds. The staff of Queen of Peace High School believe that women are responsible for using good moral judgement and therefore passing values down to the men of the school.
Should we tolerate obvious sexual discrimination in schools? Should private schools be exempt from 21st century values and rights? It does not matter who has the "potty mouth," because the fact is that to make students swear not to swear is, quite simply, obscene.
