All across the University of California system, "blue book" exams are being taken by thousands of students. But, are some students being marginalized? This proposal is to eliminate any lingering questions, doubts, and bias about a subjective grade that a might student receive. I propose to swap a student's full name with their student ID number.
Ever since California passed Prop. 209(1996), the University of California system based applicants on their merits alone. But what about grades? TAs(teacher assistants) are to exercise strict scrutiny when grading and to uphold an ethical standard, but they are humans and some are undergraduates that err, no? Although we might view TAs to uphold a higher ethical standard, but as humans, we are all susceptible to slip-up.
There are no statistically significant information to support that these grades are administered fairly but supporting evidence about the biases around the campuses are prevalent. For example, Alexandria Wallace's rant at UCLA or the noose hanging from Giesel at UCSD. Perhaps we like to assume that we are insulated from racism on campus or in this society, but that is false. Yet this is not solely a race issue since gender biases and other biases towards a person is prevalent today.
I strongly feel that this will close a loophole that allowed these doubts and biases to filter through. So I urge you to sign this petition to ensure that every student at all the University of California campuses can truly receive a "fair" grade.
