Laura Dekker set out from the Caribbean island of St Martin on January 20, 2011. Almost a year to the day, on Saturday January 21, she returned to the port to beat the previous record by eight months.
However she will not be recognised in the Guinness Book of World Records as its policy is not to honour minors for records which are considered "unsuitable".
The World Sailing Speed Record Council has also said it will not verify her claim, as it no longer recognises records for youngest sailors
