Today, the Chicago Teacher's Union went on strike for the first time in 25 years. The 29,000 teachers and school workers were forced to take this dramatic action after Mayor Rahm Emanuel repeatedly refused to communicate with the teacher's union.

Mayor Emanuel refuses to support teachers and demands they do more work for less money. The CTU wants to limit class sizes - Mayor Emanuel refuses. The Chicago Public School system agreed to offer teachers a four percent raise last year - Mayor Emanuel canceled this agreement.

Mayor Emanuel has been catering to corporate interests who want to expand charter schools in Chicago. Even though studies have found that most charter schools deliver results similar to those of public schools, corporate educational reformers heavily promote them. It's no coincidence that charter school staff are usually not unionized.
