Don't cancel the digitization class in 2013!

It is very possible that the Duplication, Archiving and Preservation second year intensive class will be cancelled next year due to lack of interest, unless we show that we want to take it! This is currently the only class offered in our masters course that covers the conservation and issues around digital material. Seeing as this course is the only conservation masters in Australia, cancelling this course would remove our proffession from dialogues around digital material in Australia.

In the next two weeks, during Treatment 1,  teachers are going to "gauge interest" to finalize what intensives to hold next year, and this is our only real opportunity to prevent the digital preservation class from being cancelled. We need at least 15 people to show interest in the class. Please sign this petition if you are interested in taking this course, or send a message to studentconservators@gmail.com

We are in a difficult situation:  The 2012-14 class is the largest group of students CCMC has ever had, yet we hear incesantly of downsizing of conservators in te museum section. With this in mind, not participating in the field of digital preservation, one of the few growing fields in collection management, seems like an unwise thing to do! A bit like ensuring our own obsolescence. Most students who have gone through the course insist it is really important material that all conservators should know, as they aquire generic skills that are relevant to most jobs (and will become more and more important!). For more course info click here: https://handbook.unimelb.edu.au/view/current/CUMC90015

It would be a shame to cancel a course that is so important to our education. We need all the skills we can get.
