The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship is a US Department of Education program that provides academic year and summer fellowships to assist meritorious undergraduate students and graduate students receiving training in modern foreign languages and related area studies. Unfortunately, these fellowships are under attack as part of Congressional budget cuts. These funds allow future American leaders to gain a better understanding of other cultures and as such should be seen as a vital part of the budget that should continue receiving funds.
