There is a lot of talk about the amount student debt in the United States. There is also a lot of talk about how to solve this debt problem. Colleges and Universities grossly over charge students in tuition and fees, knowing that students are going to be financing there way through college. Our society hypes up education like it is the most important thinng to being successful in life, which I don't deny it's importance, however it is greatly over emphasized. An education is not so important that a student should drown himself in debt to obtain it, then pass the debt off to the American taxpayers. Debt forgivness is not the answer nor is the transfer of debt. In today's economy these are not good solutions. To solve this problem we need to begin educating our young men and women before they go to college, on the expenses of college. Not just the expenses but on the economy, jobs, etc. Financing is the last thing that should be discussed with future students. When financing is discussed it should be taught involving the things they were taught about the economy and jobs, and marketability, along with the risks and consequences of financing their way through college. Second there should be more and cheaper alternatives for those who can't afford an expensive college education. Third, I believe that Colleges and Universities, make more than enough profit from the students that attend them, and especially from the amount of revenue raised from athletics such as footbal, and basketball, etc. that they can afford to pay down some of the debt the helped to create by taking advantage of the undeducated youth the would attentd there schools. This would help reduce the amount of debt the students have to pay off, while still leaving them with some of the responsibility of there own actions.
