While almost all sates have some form of anti-bullying law on the books, they vary greatly in form and strength. Now, after several tragic student suicides and with cyber-bullying on the rise, officials are realizing we need stronger laws that do more to not only protect students, but to foster a safer school environment overall.
Every state needs comprehensive anti-bullying laws that have:
- Clear definitions of bullying and harassment of students
- Training for teachers, administrators and students
- Investigation protocols for all reported incidents
- School-level staff dedicated to combatting bullying
Every child has the basic civil right to a high-quality education that should not be abridged by the circumstance of his or her birth, zip code or sexual orientation. More than 20 states have taken up anti-bullying legislation in the past year, but we must protect every child in every school in every state.
Pledge to support efforts to pass comprehensive anti-bullying legislation
