About half of Toronto's library workers are part time employees, and most of those are women. They and their union leaders are very concerned that the Library Board's 2013 proposed budget cuts could result in 50% layoffs.

And they're not waiting to get the ax before they act.

For days the two sides have attempted to resolve concerns over layoffs. However, after extending deadlines several times, negotiations have stalled, and union president Maureen O'Reilly told CBC News that workers were left with little choice. They can hardly make a living as it is, she explained, and to be faced with further layoffs would be unacceptable.

Now Toronto library workers are saying, "enough!"  It's time to strike!

With its 1872 typographers' march, Canada led the way for labor reforms in the US and elsewhere, and now Canadians deserve to hear from us all, not just for workers' rights, but for the public's right to a working library system.

Tell Toronto's library workers we support your strike.
