Dear Concerned Parents-
Did you know the following concerning our school?
The area that our children and teachers use as the gymnasium/cafeteria each day has a damaged center beam supporting the roof which is held in place by a 4 x 4 scaffolding. The scaffolding was placed in this area due to continuous deterioration of the roof due to the weather effects, the age of the roof and lack of sufficient repair. Several attempts have been made to patch the roof to prevent cracks and leaks. However, a full repair has never been made. During the 2010 -11 school year, a snowstorm dumped heavy snow on the roof and as a result, a great deal of water accumulated which lead to further damaged of the roof and extensive leaking in this area. The following has been done to address the roof issue:
A.) The Fire Marshall's inspections (Sept. 11, 2012 & January 25, 2013) stated that there is structural damage of the center beam supporting the roof .
B.) A grievance was filed by our teachers via the Providence Teachers Union (March 1, 2013) to the Superintendent concerning the damaged roof and scaffolding. However, the Superintendent denied the grievance and no action was taken concerning the repairs.
C.) One parent has spoken to the Superintendent concerning her child being injured in the gymasium area. However, no action was taken concerning the repairs.
Since our children and teachers have to use this area in the regular school day each day, the following is a great concern for parents, children and the teachers:
1.) Safety - Several children have been injured over the past school year during the gym period. One student is still under dentist's care due to injurying his mouth resulting in a tooth loss.
2.) Disruption of Activity - This area can not be used for physical activity. Therefore, this does not allow for regulary exercise as part of the school curriculum.
3.) Modify the Area - When this area is used for lunch, the tables are moved around to prevent any injuries due to the scaffolding in the center of the floor while our children have lunch.
This is unacceptable and poses a threat to the safety and well-being of all who enter this area.
The PTO urges the school officials and mayor to address the roof issue by meeting with parents at the school hear their concerns and to define an action plan to implement repair of the roof through identifying resources that will bring a swift but thorough resolution to this issue.
