This petition is in response to the pending SGA legislation regarding the Boy Scouts of America's stance on homosexuals within the BSA. The Elon SGA has moved to issue a statement opposing the BSA's policy, based on the belief that Elon and the BSA have similar values. In opposition to the pending statement, this petition represents the belief that it is not the role of Elon's SGA to make broad declarations either supporting or opposing the political stances of private organizations. Please note that this petition does not represent one side or the other of the national debate involving homosexuals in the BSA. It strictly concerns the precedent that could be set if SGA passes the resolution. If the resolution passes, it would define for SGA a role to make political statements regarding controversial issues that may or may not represent Elon's student body, which is contrary to the purpose of a Student Government Association.
