There are many advantages to allowing students to use their cellphones during school hours.
* Tearchers can increase parent involvement and help strengthen the connection between home and school.
* Parents need to know that they can reliably connect with their kids, particularly in the case of a family, local, or larger emergency.
* Cell phones at school can save us money by decreasing the need for many computers. By signing this petiton it will minimize the need for administrative cuts by bettering the budget.
* If a student has a medical problem, they can reach their parents if they do not want to go to the school nurse. If the student is in a position where they cannot get help from someone at school, they have their phone to contact the appropriate people such as the police or the hospital.
* If we are pr
eparing our students for life after school, we should allow them to use the tools they will be using when they get there.
* Double standards are not OK. I know of several districts where administrators come into classrooms with iPhones and/or iPads to take notes on teacher observations. Yet, in these same classrooms students are not allowed to use mobile devices.
