Mater Dei Academy of Kearny, NJ was established with the merger of Holy Cross of Harrison and St. Stephens School of Kearny, NJ in 2009, a decision made by the Archdiocese of Newark. We are the last surviving Catholic school in the West Hudson area and if we don't try to save this school it will be gone forever.
On February 16, 2012 the families of Mater Dei family were notified by mail that the school would be closing at the end of this school year, by order of the Archdiocese of Newark. Prior to this date, there was no mention of any financial or enrollment problems causing the school to be in jeopardy of closing. The school was never given a fair chance to try and make a difference to resolve the problem. We had just begun the registration process at the beginning of February for the 2012-2013 school year when we were all blind sided by the news of the closure, and not given a chance to get students enrolled for the upcoming year.
The mission of Mater Dei Academy and all Catholic schools is to provide a spiritual and Catholic upbringing for our children. This is the reason we as parents make a financial sacrifice to send our children to parochial schools. The Archdiocese that consists of the highest church leaders and role models should support the school and try their best to make sure that the last West Hudson school remain a viable option for our children. We understand that these are hard economical times but the church leaders should do what is right for our children as well as the faculty and staff. The people who work at the school are pillars in the Catholic community and the children are the heart of the catholic church. There is too much confusion surrounding the reasons for closing the school so abruptly and that can lead to acrimony.
We would like your support by signing our petition to keep the school open. Let's try to save the school so it can continue to make a difference in our children's lives with the wonderful teachers and staff that have dedicated themselves to the enrichment of our children both spiritually and mentally. Not to mention that they have also unselfishly worked with no yearly pay raises for several years and to now loose there jobs altogether. Let's send our message of disapproval to the Archdiocese of Newark and demand that they invest in our last and most cherished school, Mater Dei Academy.
Please also pray to the matriarch of our school the Mother of God to keep our school open.
