We, the people of the Massapequas, disagree with the District Administration’s and the Board of Education’s proposed elimination of 35 teachers in the Massapequa Public Schools District for the 2013/14 school year.

We respectfully ask that the District Administration and the Board of Education reconsider the implementation of this measure not only in terms of the negative impact upon our children, but also in terms of the negative impact upon our community.

Our children will suffer by losing some of the most talented, ambitious, effective and caring teachers in the District.  Homeowners and taxpayers in the District will suffer financially in the face of potentially declining property values if the reputation of the Massapequa Public Schools is tarnished.  We must maintain the excellent reputation of the Massapequa Public Schools in order to attract new families to the District.

We urge the District Administration and Board of Education to seek other avenues to address the issues surrounding the decrease in the District’s student enrollment and the budgetary shortfalls.
We urge the District Administration and the Board of Education to explore a reallocation of teaching resources (e.g., by virtue of other teacher retirements or leaves of absence) rather than an elimination of 35 teaching positions.

Firing our teachers at the expense of our children’s education is not the answer.

Please reconsider the proposal to excess 35 teaching positions in the Massapequa Public Schools.
