It is time for a change in how IV calculations are taught at Prairie State College.
How can it be that a 5 question test on IV calculations, that is taught in approximately 20 minutes, determine whether an individaul is capable of becoming a proficient, sound and safe Nurse? We are asking for the following changes in order to provide better instruction and ultimately a better retention rate.

1. IV medication calculations are taught for an entire discussion period.

2. A minimum of 3 group tutoring sessions are available and in place from the day the class is taught until the test is given.

3. In the event a student does not pass the test the first time, a one on one tutoring session will be provided by a member of the nursing department.

4. If a stuednt fails the test the second time, a member of the nursing staff will review the students IV calculations skills with them and make recommendations on performing this skill.

5. If the student fails to pass the test on the third attempt by one error, has a minimum test average of 85%, has passed all lab demonstration skills, and is passing in clinical, they will have one week to do a remediation program and one last attemp to pass the IV calculation test.

We as student nurses feel that this is fare and just. We as student nurses know the amount of anxiety that comes along with repeating any test or skill. But most of all, we as student nurses know that above all else, our patients' saftey is the most important factor. All that we ask, is that we are given the opportunity to be adequately instructed on IV calculations skills so that so that we can continue to persue our dreams of becoming a Registered Nurse.
