Colorado is about to make it illegal for kids under 3 to have a traditional Montessori Education.
Until January of this year, many Montessori schools were able to get waivers from the Colorado Department of Health and Human Services so they could use traditional materials that might be considered as "chokeables" or "breakables." Now, they will have no choice but to stop using these materials.
Over one-third of important Montessori items would be illegal under this bill. Either the items will have to be removed, altering the valuable core of the curriculum, or children under a certain age will have to be removed. This will not only have a detrimental effect on the local economy; local two and a half year olds will also lose their chance to receive one of the highest qualities of education available at a crucial developmental stage.
Montessori schools have a perfect safety record. There has been no known case of a child choking on a Montessori material or being seriously injured by them, and CDHS has not introduced any evidence that there is a serious risk to the public. Those who are familiar with the Montessori program know that all children are receiving an impeccable level of supervision.
Please do not allow the CDHS to make real Montessori education illegal in Colorado. Stand with Montessori education!
