Transferability of POST 9/11 GI Bill Education Benefits

Currently the Post-9/11 GI Bill allows service members (officer or enlisted, Active Duty or Selected Reserve), on or after August 1, 2009, to transfer unused education benefits to immediate family members (spouse and children). The service member must have at least six years of service, and commit to an additional four years of service in order to transfer benefits to a spouse or child. Because of the potential impact of this benefit on recruiting and retention, transferability policy is determined by the Department of Defense (DoD) and the military services.

We feel that anyone who signed up for the Post 9/11 GI Bill while on active duty and retired with 20 or more years of honorable service after September 10, 2001 or retired with a 100% service connected disability should be allowed to transfer their unused Educational Benefits to their spouse and children so long as they retired after September 10, 2001.   Monies should be made available to pay off any student loan acquired by a spouse and or children of a retiree if they otherwise would have qualified and the loan was taken during the qualifying time.
