- As parents the last place we should fear sending our children is school. A lot has changed in the past ten years regarding our children’s safety. Sadly it’s taken children killing children in our schools time and time again for any of us to step up and do anything about it. We are scanning photo IDs and locking outside doors, but that’s only part of the problem. Our children need to be taught and shown that the police officers are there for them. We need to put School Resource Officers (SROs) in our schools. Not just in our High schools and our middle schools, but in our elementary schools as well. School shootings are happing and we need to be the main defense against preventing this from happening to us.
A SROs job is to not only be a law enforcement officer but to also be a law related counselor and a law related education teacher. There is no reason why we shouldn’t implement this program. Teaching our children that this isn’t the normal way to handle our problems, and then in the same breath giving them the tools that can help educate against violence. - In the past year alone there have been 34 deaths in school shootings, in just this past week we have seen 27 die to a single school shooting. That’s nothing if you were to add up the past ten years, there have been 187 deaths due to school shootings. Let’s not add to that number by being caught off guard. We live in a safe neighborhood lets keep it that way and educate our children and keep our schools safe. School shootings are real and are becoming an epidemic.
- This is the letter to that will be sent with the signatures:
Dear School Administration, The State of Idaho, Governor C.L “Butch” Otter and other concerned parties
After recent shootings both at schools and public places we are concerned about our children’s safety. We can’t control what happens in public places but we can control what happens at our schools. We are asking that an emergency school levy be imposed to fund School Resource Officers at all school district 272 schools. The cost behind employing a “SRO” in each school would never equal the cost of losing just one child to a school shooting. You can agree that there is no price for a child’s life. And the people who sign this petition also agree. As parents and guardians of the students of Idaho we need to stand together and pass this levy to create a change in the safety of our schools. The severity of the crimes have evolved and so should our safety protocol. Remember that our schools should be safe havens and we shouldn’t fear sending our kids to school. In conclusion safety should always be number 1.
Sincerely,
Robert Farrell, (Father of 6)
And the Citizens of District 272
