This petition has been started because there has been another horrible and deeply saddening school shooting. This time, the tragedy has occurred in Newtown, Connecticut. This petition is calling for the immediate implementation of electronic access control to be used as a MINIMUM safety requirement for all public schools in the United States.
THIS IS NOT ABOUT GUN CONTROL. IT IS ABOUT SCHOOL SAFETY.
Traditional locking mechanisms were sufficient in the past to secure a school. With the rise of public mass shootings, there is nothing more important than safety. Using technology can be to our advantage. State-of-the-art electronics are used in all aspect of our lives. Why can't it be used to also protect our children, family, and loved ones in a public school setting? This is a simple, yet effective step to help monitor visitors in an attempt to make schools a safer place for students and teachers. THIS IS THE LEAST WE CAN DO.
This petition does NOT claim that school doors even had anything to do with the terrible event that happened in Newtown. This petition is not to reform the education system. It is, however, a petition set forth to ask for the minimal requirement of safety standards to include electronic access controls in all public schools. It is a petition that asks how many more times must a situation like this arise because nothing had been done the last time. This is not a difficult standard to set. It is once again, a simple yet effective minimum standard we should hold our public schools to so a security system can be a front line tool to deterring unwanted visitors in a public school setting.
- I do not mean to offend anyone by writing this on the same day this horrific slaying of innocent people occurred. We are most passionate about the issue right when it happens and, often times, interest is lost not long after. We need to act right now when the eyes of the nation are watching this issue and make changes regarding public school safety before another sad day like this has to happen again.
