Dear Board of Education,
We the students of E.E. Smith high school highly disagree with the actions that have been put into place, a problem that we are against is having our electronical devices taken away and being suspended for it is a bit preposterous. Extreme measures like this will not help the school prevail in any way at all if that’s what one was thinking and the disadvantage for the school to keep the device is even worse. We that our principle “Ms. Charmers” blown this out of proportion and we guess put this into play. The code of conduct states that phones aren’t allowed on campus but unless for educational purposes which is understandable and many students do have it for education for instance some use Edmodo from off their phone or show a video for the class even research an answer for the teacher. Although some students will text others may have an emergency which getting a call from the office won’t do. We present this petition to end this foolish act of being suspended for a phone and devise a better method that both students and Principle can tolerate but most importantly the Board of Education. This plan can lead to greater things meaning students have a better reason to keep their grades up also the ability for students in the class to do actives using their devices. The big three’s is what we call it for the Board to take notice and consider this great opportunity.
1. 1. Students should be able to have their electronical devices only when granted permission. This can be from teachers saying it’s alright to have it out. *All devices must be on silent, if listening to something through headphones it must be kept at a level to where it doesn’t bother other students.*
2. 2.Teachers will have students sign a contract stating that they will have three strikes. First time is a warning and the second time means the student lose the privilege to use their phone in the class until the semester is over. If a student still fails to comply than they will be suspended for three days or more. Repeat offenders can be placed in ISS for the remainder of the semester and students will not receive their phone back until two weeks has passed by. In addition students that use their device to cheat on a test is automatically lose their privilege throughout the whole year and a parent teacher conference will be planned.
3. 3. Lastly students must have a C average in whichever class, in order to continue using their phone if not they’re suspended from their privilege until improved.
