Catholic Church Reconciliation With First Nations

Proposal

Whereas:

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada, 2012

Interim Report, states that:

The truth about the residential school system will

cause many Canadians to see their country differently. These

are hard truths, but only by coming to grips with these truths

can we lay the foundation for reconciliation. (p.25 Conclusions)

Finally, there is no reason for anyone who wants to

contribute to the reconciliation process to wait until the

publication of the Commission’s final reports. There is an

opportunity now for Canadians to engage in this work, to

make their own contributions to reconciliation, and to create

new truths about our country. (p.27) Recommendations

And whereas:

In April of 2009, the Holy See Press Office issued the following communiqué:

“… His Holiness emphasized that acts of abuse cannot be tolerated in society. He prayed that all those affected would experience healing, and he encouraged First Nations Peoples to continue to move forward with renewed hope.”(Holy See Press Office 2009)

And Whereas:

We are Catholic Listening Circles; grassroots Catholics in Peterborough who wish to make our own contributions to reconciliation, and to create new truths about our country and our Church.

It is proposed that: Sacred Heart College in Peterborough dedicate a full history course to the study of Truth and Reconciliation.  It is strongly suggested that a qualified First Nations instructor would be ideal for the course and this course be available to students at the earliest possible date.           hmccarthy6@hotmail.com  705 748 3680
