Hurricane Sandy has resulted in tremendous damage in the the New York City area. Throughout the city, the storm has resulted in the closure of 40 NYC Public Schools for an indefinite amount of time; and this includes The Scholars’ Academy in Rockaway Park. The Rockaway Peninsula, from east to west, was one of the places that suffered the worst of the storm: Students and teachers from Scholars’ and other places lost their homes, and saw their neighborhood thrown into devastation. Rockaway is a close community, however, and this sense is also present at Scholars’; our school and our community. The students at both The Scholars’ Academy High School and Middle School are a close knit group group: We are proud of the great school that we’ve helped create and that we are a part of. For that reason, we are extremely dedicated to our studies, but also to our teachers. Having to take classes at other schools just wouldn’t be right; we’ve already started our learning this year, and we are not ready to give it up. Being the committed students that we are, we are ready and willing to do what it takes to stay together and continue our advanced learning, whether it be through evening classes or some other method. We need to need to be all together in the same location, we just need to find a place.
The high school senior class, especially, does not want to be broken up. We’ve been together for seven years, and we desperately want to finish out this year as a family. We’re the last remaining class from the first complete middle school, and it would be a shame if our last year would have to spent apart in unfamiliar places, with unfamiliar faces, and classes that aren’t suited for us. If we could just get help to find a place that would allow us to remain together in order to graduate together, we would be forever grateful. Sandy has ravaged so many things, we just don’t want it to ravage the last year that we have together. Thank you.
