Equitable Education Starting at the Top

It has become evident that education is no longer valued in American society.  The reasons for this are plentiful, but none include evil teachers who only want to get paid.  Most of the reasons come from incompetence at the highest levels.  The elected and appointed leadership of education nationwide is to blame for the growing hatred toward a once highly-esteemed profession and the growing belief that students can do no wrong while teachers and administrators can only do wrong.

This, of course, will not be recognized as the fault of these elected and appointed leaders – and in truth it is not their fault, no more than it is the fault of a patient trusting a IT professional to perform a quadruple-bypass.  The elected officials, and those people they appoint in positions to govern education, have little to no background in the field.  Because of this, who can blame them for not actually understanding how education works?

To that end, we, the undersigned, propose broad-reaching changes to the “leaders” of the American education system.  Just as teachers and principals must be certified by individual states to practice their profession, those in positions of administration in educational districts should be held to the same standards.  Of late, there have been too many cases of people being granted waivers to hold administrative positions in education.  Without proper background, no waiver or phony certificate will give that person the required knowledge to make informed, well rounded, and equitable decisions regarding education.

We, the undersigned, feel strongly that a reform is necessary in the United States requiring all education leaders (Chancellors, Education Board Presidents, School District Supervisors, Mayors, Governors, State Education Department Presidents, Secretaries of Education, and Presidents) hold a valid and earned (by completing all the requirements) certificate in Education equal to one that a newly certified teacher would hold.

Until such time as this happens, the decisions made by people in this positions regarding education and the welfare of millions of schoolchildren should be considered as meaningful as the aforementioned quadruple-bypass from a computer technician.
