We've seen a lot of crazy proposals for teaching religion instead of real science, but NH Representative Jerry Bergevin's latest attack on evolution pushes the envelope. Bergevin recently declared that evolution is nothing but a godless, atheist agenda.
Atheists, he goes on to say, are responsible for pretty much all the atrocities in the Soviet Union, China, and Nazi Germany. Even school shootings are no longer the work of the alienated and bullied. They are somehow the fault of atheists. "Columbine, remember that? They were believers in evolution," Bergevin told the Concord Monitor.
Evidently, nobody told Bergevin that Charles Darwin's theory had fans within the Anglican Church immediately after its publication, and Bergevin hasn't noticed the vast number of Americans who manage to believe in God and evolution simultaneously.
Tell Bergevin to keep his religious ideas in church and let science teachers teach real science in the classroom.
