Taconic Hills Parents & Students Right to Choose

Many of you in the Taconic Hills School District have heard about the school's upcoming policy concerning health & wellness. The new Federal Guidelines are being followed by the school, but in addition to this they are trying to do away with ice cream being sold in the cafeteria, doing away with the vending machines in the cafeteria, not allowing sports teams to stop for dinner after games and the discontinuation of fundraisers selling items such as Cinnabon and Cookie Dough.  The school board is also banning the use of items such as M&Ms and Fruit Loops as math tools, and banning the children from making gingerbread houses using graham crackers and candies while in school. While most parents agree that our children’s health and wellness are a major concern, we feel that the TH board is taking their position of power a bit too far. By passing a Policy to restrict these items, it is basically saying that the parents are unable to make these decisions for themselves.

It should be the parents’ choice to allow their children to purchase an ice cream after their lunch, or give their athlete money to stop and have dinner after not eating since lunch. And it should definitely be the PUBLICS decision to purchase items such as Cinnabons and cookie dough if they so choose.

Instead of banning these choices for the children, we are asking that they instead teach the children about moderation, and allow the parents to help their children make the responsible decision about what food they should eat. The Federal Guidelines are restrictive enough that we don’t need the TH School board to restrict what our children eat even further.

If you agree with this statement, please sign this petition in the space below to help protect the parents/guardians right to choose what their children are allowed to eat while at school. We will be attending a school board meeting to hopefully put a stop to this new policy.
