Stop Funding Sex-Segregated Classrooms

In the mid-1990s, there were only two single-sex public schools in the U.S.; now, over 500 public schools in 40 states offer single-sex academic classes. The rise in sex-segregated classrooms is due to the proliferation of pseudoscience that says male and female brains are innately different.

In these sex-segregated classrooms, boys are assigned action novels and asked to write about hunting or racing cars, while girls are asked to study makeup and write about wedding dresses and parties. Educators claim that "boy brains" are more interested in sports, combat, and construction, while "girl brains" are more inclined to fashion and relationships.

Yet, according to a recent article in the journal Science, "There is no well-designed research showing that single-sex education improves students' academic performance, but there is evidence that sex segregation increases gender stereotyping and legitimizes institutional sexism."

Sign now to call on President Obama to rescind changes made to Title IX during the Bush administration, which allow more public single-sex classrooms. Urge Obama to redirect funds currently being spent on pseudoscientific "gender-specific learning styles" into programs that train teachers to integrate boys and girls more completely in inclusive learning environments.
