CAU will be positioned to become a cultural and leadership bridge builder in current and future advancements in education. Roanoke, Virginia, at one time, had two of the top African-American high schools in the entire southeastern United States - George Washington Carver and Lucy Addison. Today the Roanoke Valley is still the largest metropolitan region in southwestern Virginia. One major intellectual difference between Roanoke and other similar cities in Virginia, such as Richmond, Norfolk, and Hampton, and other nearby cities like Knoxville (TN), Greensboro (NC), Winston-Salem (NC), and Raleigh-Durham (NC), is the lack of a historically black college or university. In 2012 Howard University is as relevant as Harvard University, and Carver-Addison is needed as much as Cambridge University. For more information about the importance and future of HBCUs.
