Schools should serve water at lunch for at least a similar cost to the pint cartons of milk because:
- milk and water create the same amount of waste material
- Studies show that drinking water during the school day reduces the chances of childhood obesity by almost 30%.
- According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 85% of middle school children don't drink enough water every day.
~ Children need to drink 6-8 8-ounce glasses of water everyday, and teenage boys need as many as 11 servings of water everyday.
~ Since kids spend about half of their waking hours at school, they should be getting about half of their water needs at school too.
- Children who are lactose intolerant or choose to be vegans, cannot or will not drink milk with their lunches have to carry a water bottle inbetween classes and this can be difficult if they are also carrying books. Their lockers may be too full, or not big enough to fit a water bottle that will get them though the day.
