WHY?
The “China Model” teaching handbook selected biased information and demonstrated narrow-minded nationalism, emphasizing the indoctrination of (patriotic) emotions rather than encouraging students to learn from the country’s mistakes. The government has rushed to draw a line between itself and the materials, describing them as “not up to standard” and saying they should not be jumbled together with the “Moral and National Education Curriculum Guide”. But we are not reassured because the government funded the production of these materials. What is more, they were published after the draft of the guidelines was published for consultation in May 2011. It is obvious the guidelines were used as reference in the production of the booklet. Parents aren’t just worried the materials are related to the guidelines but that they in fact reflect the real purpose of the guidelines in the first place.
OUR STANCE
1. Withdraw the “Moral and National Education” course and to launch a new round of comprehensive consultations.
1. Withdraw the “Moral and National Education” course and to launch a new round of comprehensive consultations.
2. Students should be taught about their roles as citizens at the local, national and international levels, also about the universal values of justice, peace, diversity, tolerance, human rights and democracy.
3. Urge all schools in Hong Kong to abandon the use of this and all such sub-standard teaching materials.
